A professor of Constitutional Law, Bassanini was a member of parliament in Italy between 1979 and 2006 and held ministerial positions in the Prodi (first administration), D’Alema and Amato (second administration) governments between 1996 and 2001. He is the chairman of the ASTRID Foundation, a specialist think tank focusing on public policy, Italian and European institutions, public finance and e-government (www.astrid.eu).
He is the Honorary President of the Long-Term Investors’ Club.
The chairman of Cassa Depositi e Prestiti from 2008 to 2015, Bassanini is on the board of Assonime and the advisory board of the FeBAF and the FFA.
He has been a member of the Commission pour la libération de la croissance française (Attali Commission), of the board of directors of the BNA, of the Comité d’évaluation des stratégies ministérielles de réforme and of the UN Secretary-General’s ICT advisory board.
Bassanini has taught at universities in Rome, Milan, Florence, Trento and Sassari, as well as publishing 19 books and 350 scientific articles in the field of public law, economic law, public finance and European law.
