Who we are
Open Fiber S.p.A., an Enel S.p.A. and Cassa Depositi and Prestiti shareholding company, was founded in December 2015 with the aim of realizing the installation, supply and operation of a high-speed fibre optic communication network.
Open Fiber is realising the ultra broadband fibre optic network nationwide, using – where it is possible – other subject’s existing physical infrastructures, accessible to all the interested operators.
The infrastructure’s implementation plan includes the coverage of the following cities in 2017: Milan, Bologna, Turin, Genoa, Venice, Padua, Florence, Perugia, Naples, Bari, Catania, Palermo and Cagliari. Keep in touch with our website or Facebook and Twitter social networks to be always updated on our programme.
Keep in touch with our website and with our Social channels to stay up to date on our plan.
Open Fiber’s aim is to cover the entire city unless there are technical or administrative restrictions that will be verified during the wiring step.
There is no definitive time, it depends on several factors, comprehending the operator’s availability. Marketing will commence before the wiring of the city is completed, to immediately allow the service activation in the first cabled buildings.
What we do
Gigabit is the unit of measurement that represents one billion bit and is usually shorten in Gbit o Gb. It is often used with megabit and kilobit, in relation to time (seconds) to calculate digital signals’ transmission speed, especially used to calculate a data’s speed in download.
Fiber to the Home – FTTH technology - is a telecommunication network that allows the connection of every building with fibre optic, directly from the central station. Copper is no longer used is any segment.
With the latest FTTH technology, you could surf the Internet with speed up to Gbit/s in both download and upload, without interruptions. You will be able to see HD and 4K videos, download high-quality pictures, take part to on-demand lessons and video calls, work from home, communicate with your “distant friends”, automatically save your work to the cloud in no time and much more. Higher speed, greatest possibilities.
Performances depend on the operators that provide services and on the kind of subscribed contract, not on Open Fiber’s fibre optic network, that does not represent any restriction to the performance. Therefore, if you need information or technical and commercial details on the service, remember that operators directly state it. To view the full list of Operators that use Open Fiber’s network, visit our website’s PARTNERS section.
How we do it
Our aim is to wire entire areas. So no, it is not necessary a request to bring Open Fiber’s fibre optic to your building.
Preparatory and wiring works are carried out by a contracted firm authorised by Open Fiber S.p.A., upon agreement with the administrator, who will be identified by his ID badge.
Not always. It suffices that the rooms where the PTE installation will take place are accessible to Open Fiber’s technicians.
The installation of Open Fiber’s fibre optic is paid for by the company. Therefore, you do not have to pay anything for the infrastructure.
Open Fiber S.p.A. realises an fibre optic facility for each building, for the building exclusive use. The facility is 100% Fibre (FTTH - Fiber To The Home) and brings fibre optic from road network to each house. The network installed is passive, so does it not need any electronic connections.
Excavations can be carried by one (or a combination) of the following methods: innovative technique known as "minitrincea ridotta", which includes even the waste material removing, reducing powder and diseases for the citizens; - “minitrincea tradizionale” (an excavation method with a low environmental impact which, thanks to the creation of a 5cm width trenches, allows to drastically break down time and costs of the laying operations; - in no-dig (without traditional excavations); - air network laying. Traditional excavations will be planned only where none of the other solutions can be used.
Once the works are finished, the road restoration will be carried out in two different ways. Step 1: after the laying of the fibre, a temporary filling of the excavation is carried out with a red colour mortar, which allows the field’s settling. It is not possible to lay the asphalt immediately after the excavation because it could form holes and cracks. Step 2: the definitive restoration starts with asphalt, always chargeable to Open Fiber and is realised following a schedule with the municipality (every institution has its own regulation).
For the service activation, you can choose one of the operators that use Open Fiber’s fibre optic. Check on our website to find out who the operators are.
The service activation cost depends on the commercial offer of the operator you choose. Check on our website who the available operators in your city are, that have chosen to use our fibre.
It is complicated to define a single time frame. Since the houses and the user’s needs differ, the time required for installation will be assessed at the moment by the company in charge and the chosen operator.
Of course! You can request the service activation choosing from different operators and you will be contacted by Open Fiber for the installation of the fibre.
The fibre optic will be installed by a company in charge, following a telephone appointment, which will turn up with the identification card.
All the installation, laying of the fibre and Modem activation works will be carried out by the company in charge.
If you have problems with the line, you always have to contact the operator with which you have signed the contract. The operator, if necessary, will then report it to Open Fiber
If you have problems with the modem, you also have to contact the operator with which you have signed the contract. The operator, if necessary, will then report it to Open Fiber.
