Sustainability Policy

A common commitment to everyone’s well-being: Open Fiber’s contribution to sustainable development.

Open Fiber works every day to create shared value, to address environmental challenges and current and future social needs, and to lead Italy as part of the most technologically advanced countries using high-performance and eco-sustainable technologies to bridge the existing infrastructure gap and guarantee equal access to the network.

From large metropolitan cities to small towns, Open Fiber pursues its purpose of contributing to the improvement of people, families, businesses and workers’ quality of life by building a state-of-the-art, secure and reliable network infrastructure that respects the environment and free competition.

Fibre optic as an enabler

One of the issues addressed within the context of sustainable development regards the field of technology. The latter can have a dual impact on the environment and the community; while it has the potential to contribute positively in terms of innovation and development, it can also have detrimental effects on people and the environment. This is the substantial difference between ‘future-proof’ and ‘non-future-proof’ technologies.

In its role as an enabler of the country’s digital transformation, Open Fiber develops innovative technological solutions thanks to top-quality and efficient fibre-optic infrastructure that guarantees extremely high performance, the only one which is capable of supporting the evolution of the provision of services (future-proof). Open Fiber’s network enables innovative services such as:

  • Smart grid – Evolving electricity grids, by enabling new functionalities to benefit those accessing the grids and those involved in the management of the electricity system, and accelerating technological and industrial evolution in the energy transition process.
  • Industry 4.0 – Devising programmes and partnerships to foster the deployment of ultra-broadband in companies and promoting the connection between physical and digital systems, by enabling complex analysis through big data and real-time adaptation.
  • Smart city and digital hamlets – Enabling the development of digital and smart cities and hamlets that exploit technology and data-based solutions to improve the efficiency of services and the quality of life of citizens and to promote sustainable development.
  • Fiber sensing – Creating a widespread sensor system, using optical fibre as a transducer and means of transporting information (e.g. for earthquake detection or monitoring the health of the network against unpredictable damage).
  • Telemedicine – Providing the infrastructure for continuous tele-monitoring of patients to support the transmission of high-resolution data.
  • Distance learning and digitalisation of educational institutions – Facilitating distance learning and the digitalisation of educational institutions, reducing the gap caused by existing differences in infrastructure and thereby protecting the right to study.
  • Efficiency of Public Administration –  Ensuring the network infrastructure necessary for the conversion of citizen services into digital services, thereby promoting the repopulation and attractiveness of small municipalities to residents and tourists.

Open Fiber’s 10 commitments to create shared value

The Sustainability Policy translates Open Fiber’s Mission into 10 commitments that encompass the company’s values, the ethical and social principles outlined in the Code of Ethics, the core principles of the Global Compact, the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations 2030 Agenda, as well as the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights and the OECD Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises for Responsible Business Conduct:

  • Connecting the Country to overcome the digital divide, by building a world in which fibre-optic technology can improve the lives of citizens and represent a driver of change and economic, social and cultural development for the Country
  • Fighting climate change by aligning the business to the reduction of climate-altering impacts through concrete and measurable actions aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, promoting energy efficiency, and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy.
  • Contributing to the transition to a circular economy by minimising waste, maximising efficient use of resources and using materials with a low environmental impact.
  • Protecting the environment, territory and biodiversity, by investing in technologies that respect the environment in which the Company operates and by disseminating an infrastructure that is high-performance and environmentally sustainable by its very nature
  • Valoring human capital and supporting fair and inclusive working practices, by striving to create a unique environment where everyone can express their skills and talents.
  • Promoting occupational health and safety, also through the adoption of responsible behaviour by all those who, in any capacity, help to pursue the company’s objectives
  • Promoting and respecting universally recognised human rights by condemning any types of violation thereof.
  • Providing a secure and reliable infrastructure, respecting free competition by offering access on fair and non-discriminatory terms to all stakeholders.
  • Guaranteeing information security and business continuity while respecting the privacy of customers and end users.
  • Promoting responsible value chain management by encouraging and supporting sustainability best practices, being aware that the performance of the company’s value chain is intrinsically linked to that of its personnel and that their improvement reflects on the company.

Sustainability Policy

The stakeholders engagement and the creation of a corporate culture on sustainability topics are central elements of this journey, which aims to create lasting shared value with all the people Open Fiber interact with every day. The Company constantly strives to reconcile the business plan objectives with the environmental and social commitments, guaranteeing access to a fibre optic network, actively contributing to the growth of the social and economic fabric of Italian cities and supporting citizens, businesses and public administrations in the fundamental process of technological growth.
