Real City is Open Fiber’s 3D platform based on the Digital Twin model, a realistic, interactive virtual representation of a territory or environment that can provide innovative support for the design, management and monitoring of fibre-optic networks, both in cities and smaller municipalities.

Thanks to this solution, Real City makes construction processes faster, more efficient and more sustainable in the cities of the future.

A Digital Twin is a faithful, three-dimensional digital replica of a real-world environment, with significantly greater processing capabilities than standard models. Unlike traditional Street View, which is limited to panoramic photography, Real City combines:

• Detailed 360° photography
• A 3D model created from a point cloud generated using LiDAR technology

LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) technology uses laser pulses to measure distances and generate highly detailed 3D maps. Each light pulse is reflected by surfaces, and the time it takes to return makes it possible to calculate the position of every element in the territory with millimetre-level accuracy.

Open Fiber is one of the first companies in Italy to deploy this technology on such a large scale. To date, thanks to Real City:

• More than 2,800 municipalities across 14 Italian regions have been mapped in 3D
• 100,000 km of surveys have been carried out using 4 dedicated fleets
• 1.5 petabytes of data have been processed and managed on the platform
