Italy’s oldest bicycle race returns to Sicily, at the speed of light!

Five days of sport, breathtaking scenery and excitement across the most beautiful island in the Mediterranean: once again this year, Open Fiber participated in organising the Giro di Sicilia, in collaboration with the Sicily Region and RCS Sport. From Palermo to Terrasini via Etna and the Valley of the Temples, nowhere was excluded.

First stage: Palermo-Montepellegrino

The event opened in a picturesque setting in the magnificent Sicilian capital: the Santa Rosalia belvedere, which provided the backdrop for the first day of the Giro di Sicilia. A place lost in time, where the sacred and profane harmoniously unite in nature and architecture. For us it was somewhat symbolic of the long-awaited restart. Greetings to all the teams and then back to Palermo to prepare for the real battle… metaphorically speaking! Straight to the finish line where Riccardo Stacchiotti prevailed in Milazzo.

Second stage: Palermo-Giardini Naxos, Costanza Afan de Rivera Costaguti Trophy

10 June saw the teams engaged in the first real challenge of the event. A dream route along the north coast of the island, passing through Termini Imerese, Cefalù and Capo d’Orlando, before heading inland and returning to the Mediterranean, among the archaeological treasures of Taormina and Giardini Naxos. The breathtaking silhouette of Mount Etna loomed in the background, already preparing to welcome the cyclists on the next day. Only one rider managed to excel and take the Yellow and Red Jerseys as leader of the General Classification: Manuel Belletti.

Third stage: Giardini Naxos-Agrigento, Roberto Pirera Trophy

From Etna to the Valley of the Temples, on 11 June we dived into literary Sicily. Starting from the Etna municipalities so dear to Verga, we entered the inland landscapes described by Vittorini until we reached Pirandello’s homeland. The ideal setting to remind us how important it is to invest in the most environmentally friendly technologies, such as fiber optics. A sprint into the future accompanied Brandon McNulty to victory on stage three of the Giro di Sicilia.

Fourth stage: Agrigento-Terrasini, ASI Trophy – The Sicily of the Florios

Unspoilt nature and a Mediterranean dotted with lentiscus and saffron: on 12 June, we ventured into Sicily’s wildest landscapes, passing iconic sites, such as the Scala dei Turchi, on our way to the coveted finish line. A route that kept us in suspense in every respect. It was Frenchman Guillaume Martin who crossed the finish line, dominating the race with his ultra-fast sprint!

After an intense week, we came to the award ceremony for the 30th edition of the Giro di Sicilia, in which Brandon McNulty was the overall winner. An event that we looked forward to and supported with the same passion that we put into our work every day. Because after all there is a subtle parallel between the spirit of cycling and our mission: we too cross the length and breadth of the country, creating digital roads that connect municipalities, no matter how small.
